April 21 – Tell your partner about your favourite childhood memory

April 21 – Tell your partner about your favourite childhood memory

AprilShowerslogopinterest

Yet another communicative “task” and let me explain why these are so important. Financial trouble is often quoted as the leading cause of marital breakdowns but I would say the single most important thing in any relationship, and romantic ones are no different, is communication. Without effective communication you will never have a fulfilling relationship with your partner. I have no scientific evidence to quote here but ask you to do this: think of all of the couples you know and think about their communication. Is it effective or non-existent? Now think about how close and happy those same couples are. When I do that with the couples I know, the ones who cannot communicate are unhappy and always frustrated with each other. The ones who communicate seem to respect each other and are very close and happy together. It is quite telling.

Today you are going to tell your partner about your favourite childhood memory. Try to be descriptive and explain who, what, where, when, why and how. Did you go to Disneyland, win a soccer tournament or get to spend a day lounging around in your pajamas with your mom watching tv all day? It may make you feel vulnerable but vulnerability has to occur in order to “let someone in”. The more you “let your partner in” the closer you will become.

Try to tell your partner about your favourite childhood memory in person (video chat for long distance couples) so they can see your body language too. Remember the stats! 55% of the message you convey is based on your body language. 38% is based on the way you say your words. Only 7% is based on the words that actually leave your mouth. So next time you roll your eyes while your partner is talking and s/he accuses you of being rude, don’t reply with the classic, “What? I didn’t say anything.” You have actually spoken volumes.

Today’s “task” is fun and simple but very meaningful. This is a free activity that will get you chatting, playing and most likely smiling and laughing (especially if you are winning, right). Life is busy and we rarely take the time to relax and play together. So today your mission is to do just that – play!

Ellen, my girls love dancing and will dance anywhere. They made this routine grocery shopping trip fun when they turned this grocery aisle into their own dance floor!

“What’s An Ellen?”

“What’s An Ellen?”

LaunchMeEllengraphic

Kids say the darndest things.

When discussing the illustrated poem we wanted to create for you, your name obviously came up several times. “Send this to Ellen.” “Launch Me Ellen.” “Ellen will love your drawings.”

My youngest daughter, Sarah, 6, was all for contributing her illustrations to the cause and was very active in the discussion of the final product. However, before she 100% committed to anything there was something she needed cleared up, so she asked very matter-of-factly, “What’s an Ellen?”

This is not something I would have thought to explain to her. She knows who you are. When she was a preschooler, and the only one still at home, she and I danced in the living room with you everyday. Nowadays she loves watching video clips on your website. One of her favourites is the little boy singing along to Bruno Mars.

I guess she simply couldn’t imagine that we would be sending a poem that her mommy wrote and that she and her sisters illustrated, to the Ellen that we watch on tv.

Her always helpful sister Beth, 8, did not miss a beat to clarify things. Here is Beth’s answer to “What’s an Ellen?”

“Ellen has short, yellow hair.”

“She always wears those tuxedo things.”

“I am pretty sure she wears mascara because her eyes are always very black.”

“She talks to people on tv.”

“She is very funny and makes people laugh.”

April 19 – Give your partner a meaningful gift

April 19 – Give your partner a meaningful gift

AprilShowerslogopinterest

Today, give your partner a meaningful gift. It does not have to be expensive. In fact, you and your partner should decide on a price limit. A homemade gift is even easier on the wallet. Most importantly, make it meaningful! It could be as simple as a new pen or the classic mixed tape (which today would be a playlist). Just make sure it is a gift from the heart! Long distance couples, show your partner the gift you got him/her on video chat. If it is not too expensive, mail it to him/her too. If mailing it is not practical, save it to give to him/her the next time you are together.
