Last night, while Heidi was reading Dr. Seuss’ Hop on Pop to her five- year-old son, she came across this page:
After reading this page she started laughing quite hard as she realized that her Kansan dialect had interfered with the phonics intended in this book. She said, “I wondered why that never rhymed! When I was younger I would read this page and I wondered why they wrote it because sing and thing didn’t rhyme!”
And she was right, thing and sing don’t rhyme when you pronounce thing as Heidi and other Kansans do. Thang definitely does not rhyme with sing!
We had a good laugh together over the fact that it took her until she was 42 years old to realize why Dr. Seuss chose to pair thing and sing as rhyming words.
