Those that know me well know that I like cooking about as much as I love spending large amounts of time in the great outdoors (this sentence exudes sarcasm for those that don’t know me well). I am more of a rink girl and much more of a convenient food girl too. My love affair with cheeseburgers goes back to 1992, when I started working at McDonald’s for $4.55/hour. I still love them just as much today – especially with extra pickles. It is common knowledge to my soccer and hockey teammates that without fail, I score goals after consuming one. For instance, way back in 1993, I worked until 2pm (at McDonald’s) and had a soccer game in Truro (about an hour away) that started at 3pm. Our team was playing with the bare minimum of allowable players when I arrived so I was able to run onto the field immediately. Running from the car, I swallowed the last bite of my cheeseburger as I tucked in my soccer jersey (on the back was my favourite number – #19). My team went on to win the game 7-1 or something like that and I scored three goals. A good cheesburger will do that for me.
I recently took a stress in the workplace course and discovered that over the last few years I have experienced just about every single major stressor a person can experience in their life. I have fared okay considering but how do I deal with all that stress? By eating of course! A good cheeseburger alone doesn’t hurt but when accompanied by unecessary caloric intake, that takes a toll on one’s body. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do, right? Well I did and now I weigh a little more than I should – about 39.5 pounds more actually. Let’s make it clear that I have always been solid and no, that is not just a polite way of saying overweight, I actually mean solid. I think my butt muscles must weigh at least 10 pounds each! I am only 5 ‘ 3 and 3/4″ (that 3/4″ is very important) but I cannot remember ever weighing less than 145 – 150 pounds. I always think it is funny when I get to shop in the petite section of a clothing store even though I know it is because of my Barney Rubble length legs.
I have decided to take control of my eating and today started on the Atkins Diet which claims you can lose up to 15 pounds in the first two weeks. I realize that results vary but if I could lose 15 pounds then I would already weigh only 174.5 pounds by July 22! That would be quite a difference. I did this diet back in August of 2012 and lost 30 pounds so I know it works. Unfortunately stress got the best of me not long after that and so I am pretty much starting from the same point.
One thing I have to say about the Atkins Diet is that it seems that it was made just for me. Most importantly, I can still eat cheeseburgers! I just can’t eat them on the bun in the first few stages. I can also drink my second favourite version of Pepsi – Pepsi Max (the original is my absolute favourite). I can eat bacon, sausages, cheese, eggs, chicken, beef, caesar salad (basically all of my favourite things) and I can lose weight doing it! There are 4 stages to this diet. Stage 1 is the mega fat burning stage that gets your metabolism revved up! I am not going to bore you (in this post anyway) with all the scientific reasons about why it works and why it is not bad for you like people think. I know it works and I know it makes me feel better too – physically and emotionally . The only downfall is the whole having to cook and prepare my meals ahead of time thing. Check out what I made myself last night to bring to work for lunch today. A red pepper stuffed with fried and seasoned steak strips, mushrooms, zuchinni, and cheddar cheese. Cooked at 350 fahrenheit for about 10 minutes, it microwaved perfectly at work today.
